Oxfam is a global movement of people working together to end the injustice of poverty.

The Role:

This is a two years fixed term opportunity, renewable subject to availability of funding. 

Oxfam started working in Southern Africa in the 1980s. Since then, we have implemented both development and humanitarian programmes to support practical and innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty. We work with local stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the root causes which keep people in poverty. Oxfam is currently collaborating with the Government, international and local CSOs, UN Agencies and other stakeholders. Oxfam envisions Southern African countries to be free of extreme inequality and injustice; a society where citizens and particularly women across all age groups claim and exercise their rights and responsibilities and can influence decisions that affect their lives. Our regional program aims to promote women’s rights, good governance and accountability, resilient livelihoods, as well as enhance preparedness, reduce vulnerability to disaster and ensure an effective response to humanitarian crises. In view of the above Oxfam seeks to employ a Finance Coordinator who is competent, has the right skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the job.

What we are looking for: 

We’re looking for a candidate who cares about Oxfam's mission to end poverty and is personally aligned to our feminist principles and values of empowerment, accountability and inclusion in all you do.

An ideal candidate for the role will also be / have:

  • Relevant academic qualifications in financial management, commerce, economics, or related field.
  • Significant knowledge and experience of all core financial management activities, including accounts payable, cash management, budget development, statutory requirements, and standard accounts.
  • Good knowledge and experience of managing donor grants or donor funded programmes.
  • Strong numeracy skills and experience using a computerised financial management information system and good computer skills (Excel especially, Word,).
  • A critical focus on providing a superior service level to managers and staff and delivering agreed results within time and budget constraints and to expected standards.
  • Good organisational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritise work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to constantly changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through.
  • Good analytical and conceptual thinking skills with a proven proactive approach to identifying and resolving problems and suggesting improvements that continuously seek to provide a better service to Oxfam. Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent personal communication skills, in written and verbal English.
  • Ability to represent Oxfam in a professional and competent manner with external individuals and organisations.
  • Proven experience working with partner organisations and helping them develop their independent expertise and ability to deliver results, through effective capacity building and learning and development activities.
  • A high level of self-awareness, personal energy, stamina, and flexibility. Ability to work creatively, effectively and under own initiative.
  • Proven experience as a team worker and demonstrably cooperative with members of other teams, responding quickly and accurately to queries and issues.
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s overall aims and policies and experience of promoting women’s rights and the interests of marginalized people in all aspects of Oxfam’s work.
  • Knowledge or experience of Oxfam's (or similar organisation’s) program work, including field experience and/or with institutional donors.
  • Knowledge or appreciation of Southern Africa in terms of its political, economic and social trends plus a good understanding of the key development and humanitarian issues in the region.
