The Role:

 

Oxfam GB in Myanmar is looking for Communiations Coordinator.

 

Job Purpose:

 

The Communication Coordinator will lead and coordinate Oxfam in Myanmar’s communications and visibility work, with a strong emphasis on content generation, storytelling and the hands-on production of high-quality communication materials.

The role will work closely with programme teams, partners and communities to identify and document stories, evidence, results and learning from Oxfam-supported programmes and translate these into compelling communication products for external and internal audiences.

The position will strengthen Oxfam’s external visibility by producing regular digital and print content, identifying and extracting strong impact stories from programmes and transforming them into high-level communication products for donors, partners, media and wider audiences. The role will also support the design and communication of impact-focused events, develop media and visibility materials and ensure that all communication consistently reflects Oxfam’s values, brand standards, safeguarding requirements and commitment to locally led, ethical and dignified storytelling.

Communications coordinator is also responsible as OiM’s data rights focal person to oversee ethnical gathering, storage and usage of information, data and contents and digital security in close coordination with IT department.

Key Responsibilities: (Technical, Leadership, People and Resource Management)

 

Content Development and Storytelling

  • Regularly engage with programme teams, local partners and communities to identify strong stories, achievements, innovations and emerging issues that can be communicated externally.
  • Undertake regular field visits to gather stories, interviews, photographs, videos and other communication materials directly from programme locations.
  • Develop high-quality human-interest stories, case studies, programme stories, articles, profiles, blogs and short communication pieces.
  • Translate complex programme information, research findings and technical content into clear and accessible narratives for non-technical audiences.
  • Produce content that highlights community voices, local leadership, women’s leadership, partnerships and the experiences of people affected by humanitarian crises and inequality.
  • Develop compelling stories suitable for donors, supporters, partners, media, Oxfam affiliates and wider public audiences.
  • Maintain a regularly updated repository of stories, photographs, videos, quotations and other communication assets.

 Communication Products and Design

  • Personally design and produce communication materials using Canva and other relevant design and communication tools.
  • Develop regular Oxfam Myanmar newsletters covering programme achievements, partnerships, humanitarian response, learning and external engagement.
  • Produce fact sheets, programme briefs, infographics, posters, banners, event materials, presentations, social media cards and other visibility products.
  • Develop visually engaging materials using photographs, graphics, programme data and stories.
  • Support basic photo and video editing for communication purposes.
  • Ensure communication products comply with Oxfam visual identity and branding requirements while remaining appropriate to the Myanmar context.
  • Work with external designers, photographers, videographers or communication service providers when specialised production is required.

Digital and Social Media Communications

  • Develop regular content for Oxfam’s digital and social media platforms.
  • Prepare social media posts, visual cards, photographs, short videos and campaigns around Oxfam programmes, events and key international or national moments.
  • Maintain a forward-looking content calendar to ensure regular and diverse communication.
  • Identify opportunities to increase engagement and visibility through digital platforms.
  • Monitor digital communication performance and use basic analytics to understand audience engagement and improve future content.
  • Support teams and partners in generating appropriate digital content from programme activities.

External Visibility and Public Engagement

  • Strengthen the external visibility of Oxfam in Myanmar, its programmes and its partnerships.
  • Identify opportunities to communicate Oxfam’s work through external events, conferences, campaigns, publications, digital platforms and media engagement.
  • Support communication around donor visits, programme launches, public events, workshops, research publications.
  • Support senior management and programme colleagues with talking points, presentations, key messages and external communication materials where required.
  • Coordinate visibility requirements associated with donor-funded programmes, ensuring appropriate recognition while complying with contractual and contextual requirements.

Humanitarian Communications

  • Support rapid communication during humanitarian emergencies and significant programme responses.
  • Work closely with humanitarian and programme teams to gather timely information, photographs, testimonies and stories from affected communities.
  • Produce humanitarian situation updates, response snapshots, human-interest stories, donor communication materials and digital content.
  • Ensure communication during emergencies is timely, accurate, dignified and sensitive to protection and security risks.
  • Support communication needs of Oxfam affiliates and global teams during major humanitarian responses.

Ethical and Dignified Storytelling

  • Ensure that all stories, photographs, videos and communication products follow Oxfam’s safeguarding, consent, data protection and ethical communication standards.
  • Ensure informed consent is obtained before collecting or using personal stories, photographs and videos.
  • Promote communication approaches that portray communities with dignity and agency rather than as passive recipients of assistance.
  • Ensure that communication recognises the leadership, expertise and contribution of local partners and communities.
  • Apply conflict sensitivity and Do No Harm principles when communicating about programmes operating in politically sensitive or conflict-affected areas.
  • Assess potential security and protection implications before publishing sensitive information, photographs or identifying details.

Internal Coordination and Communication

  • Work closely with programme, humanitarian, fundraising and management teams to identify communication priorities and opportunities.
  • Develop an annual/periodic communications plan aligned with the Country Strategy and programme priorities.
  • Coordinate communication requests from Oxfam affiliates, regional teams, donors and other stakeholders.
  • Support programme teams to strengthen communication skills, including storytelling, photography, consent and basic content development.
  • Develop simple templates and guidance that enable programme teams and partners to contribute communication materials.
  • Coordinate with Oxfam regional and global communication colleagues where relevant.

Capacity Building & Training

  • Develop and deliver communications capacity building efforts, including trainings for Oxfam in Myanmar staff and partners.
  • Support and coach staff and partners on writing success stories.
  • Deliver induction briefings and periodic sharing sessions with staff to ensure common understanding of Oxfam in Myanmar’s social media guidelines, brand guidelines, sign-off protocol and other relevant communications related processes and policies and how they relate to Oxfam’s values and mission.

Data Rights and Digital Security

  • Act as data rights focal for Oxfam in Myanmar and support programme team on ethical gathering, storing and using information and data.
  • Conduct regular session on digital security for staff and partners in close coordination with IT team and external consultant(s).
  • Reinforce assurance of obtaining free, independent and informed consent for all photos and story gathering. 

Safety and Security

  • Complying with all security policies, procedures, directions, instructions, regulations or plans.
  • Taking care of their own safety and security.
  • Actively contributing to the development and maintenance of security management policy and procedures.

Safeguarding

  • Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies by protecting the safety and dignity of all individuals.
  • Ensure completing all annual core compliance courses.
  • Must report any concerns or witness or suspect any behaviour that could be in breach of the one Oxfam safeguarding policies (PSEA, Child Safeguarding etc) or Oxfam Code of Conduct.

Other

  • Eager and required to adhere to Oxfam’s principles and values as well as the promotion of gender justice and women's rights.
  • Understanding of and commitment to adhere to equity, diversity, gender, child safety and staff health and wellbeing principles.

  • University degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, Development Studies or another relevant discipline.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in communications, journalism, media, development or humanitarian communications.
  • Demonstrated experience personally producing communication materials rather than only managing communication processes or external consultants.
  • Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to interview people and develop compelling human-interest stories.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canva, including the ability to independently design professional communication products.
  • Experience developing newsletters, infographics, fact sheets, social media materials and other digital communication products.
  • Experience with photography and basic photo editing.
  • Experience producing or editing short videos using appropriate digital tools.
  • Good understanding of social media platforms and digital communications.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to programme locations and work directly with communities and partners to gather communication materials.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments and deliver products within tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with programme teams, partners, communities and senior colleagues.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Myanmar language.

Desirable:

  • Experience communicating humanitarian response and development programmes.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, Canva Pro or similar graphic design/video editing platforms.
  • Experience managing organisational social media channels.
  • Experience working with photographers, videographers, journalists or media organisations.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, informed consent and ethical storytelling.
  • Experience working with local civil society organisations and community-based organisations.
  • Knowledge of the humanitarian and development context in Myanmar.

The successful candidate will be a good storyteller and communicator who can find and share stories from Oxfam’s work in a clear and engaging way. They should be able to write, take photos, design and edit communication materials, and turn programme results into simple and attractive content. They should be proactive, enjoy working with communities, partners and different teams, and be willing to travel. They should also have good judgement, attention to detail, and be able to work well in a changing and sometimes challenging environment.

The Communications Coordinator is expected to demonstrate Oxfam's Values and principles in all areas of work, with a focus on equality, accountability, empowerment, inclusion and solidarity. Communications should centre community voices, recognise local leadership, promote gender equality and diversity and avoid stereotypes that may affect people's dignity.
